Specialization and concentration: A note on theory and evidence
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the prediction of the theory in Rossi-Hansberg (2003) that, under quite general circumstances, lower transport costs increase specialization of regions and decrease (regional) concentration of industries. This prediction contradicts the contention of other models and many empirical papers that specialization and concentration should move in parallel. We use two data sets on manufacturing industries across US States and EU member countries to show specialization and concentration do not develop in parallel. The empirical data replicates some of the features of the divergence predicted in the model.

A Note on Belief Structures and S-approximation Spaces
We study relations between evidence theory and S-approximation spaces. Both theories have their roots in the analysis of Dempsterchr('39')s multivalued mappings and lower and upper probabilities, and have close relations to rough sets. We show that an S-approximation space, satisfying a monotonicity condition, can induce a natural belief structure which is a fundamental block in evidence theory...
متن کاملA Perfect Specialization Model for Gravity Equation in Bilateral Trade based on Production Structure
Although initially originated as a totally empirical relationship to explain the volume of trade between two partners, gravity equation has been the focus of several theoretic models that try to explain it. Specialization models are of great importance in providing a solid theoretic ground for gravity equation in bilateral trade. Some research papers try to improve specialization models by addi...
متن کاملA NOTE ON STRATIFIED LM-FILTERS
We develop a theory of stratified $LM$-filters which generalizes the theory of stratified $L$-filters. Our stratification condition explicitly depends on a suitable mapping between the lattices $L$ and $M$. If $L$ and $M$ are identical and the mapping is the identity mapping, then we obtain the theory of stratified $L$-filters. Based on the stratified $LM$-filters, a general theory of lattice-v...
متن کاملThe Making of a New Medical Specialty: A Policy Analysis of the Development of Emergency Medicine in India
Background Medical specialization is an understudied, yet growing aspect of health systems in low- and middleincome countries (LMICs). In India, medical specialization is incrementally, yet significantly, modifying service delivery, workforce distribution, and financing. However, scarce evidence exists in India and other LMICs regar...
